Four Things to Know About Auto Insurance

If you drive a vehicle, you know that auto insurance is a must. How do you know which insurance policy to get for the best coverage for your vehicles? Here are a few quick things to know about auto insurance to help you make the best decision:

  1. Comprehensive – Think of comprehensive coverage as “other than collision”. This coverage comes into effect when you have a loss to your auto that is not caused by a collision (impact with another object or vehicle). Some examples would be weather-related claims, glass damage, contact with an animal, etc. Don’t get stuck paying for windshield damage out of your pocket because you didn’t have the proper coverage. Talk to your agent about adding comprehensive coverage to your vehicles.
  2. Collision – This coverage comes into effect when you make contact with another vehicle or object. Your collision deductible determines what you pay out of pocket when it’s time for repairs. Don’t get stuck with a high deductible you can’t afford. Discuss with your insurance agent to determine which deductible is right for you.
  3. Liability – Liability-only auto insurance will only pay for other people’s medical bills and damages you cause to their property in an accident. It will not cover any of your property damage or bills. Liability insurance is required by the state of North Carolina, but don’t get caught with limits too low, leaving you susceptible to a lawsuit. Ask your agent what liability limits they recommend to help protect your assets.
  4. Affordability – Whether you choose to carry physical damage coverage or liability only, you’ll want to discuss your budget and coverage needs to determine the best option. While liability only is cheaper, it may not provide the peace of mind that physical damage coverage does. Could you replace your vehicle in the event of a total loss? Could you repair your vehicle in the event of a comprehensive or collision loss, without help from your insurance policy? These are questions to consider when determining what coverage is right for you.
